Subject: Understanding Hoof Health – Seasonal Changes & Daily Checks

Section: Hoof Care & Farriery
Hello everyone,
As we move further into the current season, I wanted to share a quick but important refresher on hoof health – specifically how seasonal moisture and temperature changes can affect our horses.
Even if your horse is sound and active, subtle changes in hoof condition can develop over a few weeks. Here are three key areas to monitor daily:
1. The "Wet-Dry" Cycle If your paddocks are currently alternating between morning dew/rain and dry afternoons, the hoof wall can expand and contract repeatedly. Over time, this can weaken the white line and create an entry point for stones, bacteria, or thrush.
2. Frog Condition The frog should look like firm, rubbery rubber – not hard and cracked, nor mushy and smelly.
3. Farrier Timing With seasonal growth fluctuations, some horses' hooves grow faster now. Don’t just rely on a calendar – check toe length and heel height every 10 days. A horse that normally goes 8 weeks may need trimming at 6.
A small routine that takes 2 minutes daily: adilia-horse-forum
When to call the vet (not just the farrier):
Let’s share experiences – have any of you noticed more thrush or sole bruising this season compared to last? What hoof products or management changes have worked for your herd?
Stay safe, and happy hoof picking.

Note: Always consult your own farrier and veterinarian for advice specific to your horse.

As with any online community, there are etiquette traps.
Bad question: "My horse is sick. Help." Good question: "My 7yo TB gelding in light work has a grade 2 lameness on the right fore. Vet suspects suspensory. Ultrasound on Tuesday. What should I ask the vet? Photos of swelling attached."
At its core, the Adilia Horse Forum is a specialized online discussion board dedicated to all things equine. Unlike generic social media groups where posts get lost in a flood of cat videos and political debates, the Adilia Horse Forum is a structured, topic-driven platform. It was created to serve as a comprehensive database of shared knowledge—from hoof care and hay analysis to dressage scoring and trail riding etiquette.
The name "Adilia" has roots in nobility and grace, which aligns perfectly with the spirit of the horse world. The forum embodies this by promoting respectful, high-quality discourse. It is not just a place to ask questions; it is a living library where experienced breeders share lineage records, veterinarians offer preliminary advice, and farriers debate the merits of different shoeing techniques.
