Are you struggling to type in Arabic on your computer? Do you find the standard Arabic keyboard layout (where keys are mapped to English positions) confusing and slow? If you are looking for a solution that allows you to type Arabic the way it sounds using your English QWERTY keyboard, you are in the right place.
In this post, we are introducing the Arabic Phonetic Keyboard—a lightweight, legacy-compatible tool that works on all versions of Windows, from the classic Windows 95 and 98 to modern 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

Modern Systems: Windows 10 & 11 (32-bit and 64-bit)
For current Windows versions (NT-based, 32-bit and 64-bit), Microsoft provides the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC) version 1.4 (for up to Windows 10) or third-party installers. The Arabic Phonetic Keyboard is officially distributed by Microsoft as a community layout or can be built from scratch.
Steps for installation on Windows 10/11 (both architectures): Cause : Old 16-bit installer or unsigned driver
- Download the official Arabic Phonetic Keyboard installer (e.g., from the Microsoft Store or a trusted repository like GitHub).
- Run the setup file—it works identically on 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) systems due to the Windows on Windows 64 (WOW64) layer.
- Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region → Add Arabic → Add keyboard → Phonetic Arabic.
- Toggle between layouts using
Windows + Space.
No special configuration is needed for 64-bit, as keyboard layouts are language-agnostic and processed by the OS input manager (not as kernel-mode drivers).
Steps for XP/Vista/7 (32-bit & 64-bit)
- Download MSKLC from Microsoft (still available on Archive.org).
- Load a source template: Import an existing Arabic keyboard layout (like "Arabic 101").
- Remap keys phonetically:
- Map
B→ بِ (U+0628) - Map
T→ ت (U+062A) - Map
S→ س (U+0633) - Map
Y→ ي (U+064A) - Keep Shift for letters like
F(ف) → ف.
- Map
- Build the DLL and setup package.
- Run the installer (works on both 32-bit and 64-bit).
Alternatively, download a pre-built Arabic Phonetic Keyboard.msi from trusted Arabic software forums (e.g., ArabicGen or Sakhr legacy archives). Restart → Press F8 → Select Disable Driver
