  2. Do not restart yet. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc). Look for suspicious processes (random numbers, high CPU, unknown publisher). Right-click > End task.
  3. Run an offline antivirus scan. Use Windows Defender Offline (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan).
  4. Use a second opinion scanner. Download Malwarebytes (on a clean computer) and transfer it via USB. Run a full scan.
  5. Back up critical data to an external drive (if possible). Then perform a clean Windows reinstall using a USB created via Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. There is no guarantee a rootkit is gone otherwise.
