After the massive success of his debut album (featuring hits like "Holdin On" and "Sleepless"), Flume found himself trapped. The Flume Skin album was born out of a desire to destroy expectations. He retreated to a rented house in the Hollywood Hills, battling writer's block and a desire to incorporate more "organic" elements. Instead of just synth patches, he experimented with granular synthesis, field recordings, and—most famously—the sounds of a dying CD player being sampled for the track "Wall Fuck."
In interviews, Flume described the album as representing "the thin layer of shit that holds us all together." That morbid, raw sentiment is precisely what gives the record its emotional gravity.
