Title: Hollow Knight (Version 1031) on macOS: Technical Context, Acquisition, and Compatibility

Subject: Analysis of a specific software version of Hollow Knight (build 1031) and its deployment on Apple’s macOS platform.

Introduction

Hollow Knight, developed by Team Cherry, is a critically acclaimed 2D action-adventure game known for its intricate world design, challenging combat, and deep lore. Since its initial release in 2017, the game has received numerous content updates (free DLCs) and bug-fix patches, leading to a series of distinct build versions. Among these, version 1031 holds a specific, niche relevance for macOS users. Unlike Windows, where version numbers are often more visible, macOS users have faced unique compatibility hurdles due to Apple’s deprecation of 32-bit application support (macOS Catalina 10.15 and later) and the transition from Intel to Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3). This paper clarifies what version 1031 refers to, its status on macOS, and how users can run Hollow Knight on modern Mac hardware.

1. What is “Hollow Knight 1031”?

Version “1031” does not correspond to a major public release (e.g., Lifeblood, Godmaster). Instead, evidence from community forums (Reddit’s r/HollowKnight, SteamDB history) and package archives suggests that 1031 is an internal build number associated with a specific patch from mid-to-late 2018 or early 2019. Key characteristics include:

2. macOS Compatibility Landscape

To understand version 1031’s place, one must grasp Apple’s breaking changes:

| macOS Version | 32-bit App Support | Hollow Knight 1031 | Hollow Knight Current (post-2020) | |---------------|--------------------|----------------------|--------------------------------------| | 10.14 Mojave | Yes | Runs natively | Runs natively (64-bit) | | 10.15 Catalina| No | Fails to launch | Runs natively | | 11 Big Sur + (Apple Silicon) | No | Fails (both 32-bit & Rosetta 2 cannot translate 32-bit Intel code) | Runs via Rosetta 2 (64-bit Intel) or native Apple Silicon version (if provided) |

Thus, version 1031 is incompatible with any Mac that has upgraded beyond macOS Mojave (10.14). Users attempting to launch version 1031 on Catalina or later will receive an error: “You can’t open the application because it is not supported on this Mac.”

3. Acquiring and Running Version 1031 on macOS Today

Because version 1031 is obsolete and lacks 64-bit support, direct use is limited to older Macs (2015-2018 models running Mojave). For most users, two practical approaches exist:

4. Why Would Anyone Seek Version 1031?

Despite its technical obsolescence, version 1031 may be sought for two reasons:

  1. Speedrunning / Glitch exploitation: Certain sequence breaks or glitches (e.g., “storage” or “shade skips”) were patched in later updates. Version 1031 might contain a specific exploit useful for “out of bounds” runs. The speedrunning community maintains version-locked categories.
  2. Low-end hardware: On very old Macs (2010–2012 running Mojave via patchers), version 1031’s 32-bit binary could theoretically be lighter on memory, though performance differences are negligible.

5. Conclusion

Hollow Knight version 1031 on macOS is a historical artifact – a 32-bit build from roughly 2018 that only runs on macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier. It holds no advantage for general players, who should instead use the current 64-bit version available from digital storefronts. For preservationists or speedrunners, running 1031 requires dedicated older hardware or a virtualized Mojave environment (e.g., VMware Fusion with macOS guest). As Apple continues its transition away from Intel and legacy code, older builds like 1031 will become increasingly inaccessible, reinforcing the importance of updating to modern game clients.

Key Takeaway for macOS Users: Do not attempt to run version 1031 on any Mac running Catalina or newer. Instead, download the latest version of Hollow Knight from Steam, GOG, or the Mac App Store – it is fully compatible with modern Macs (including Apple Silicon) and contains all DLC content.

The Radiant Echoes of Hallownest - A Hollow Knight Inspired Piece

In the forgotten corners of Hallownest, where the once-majestic spires now pierce the sky like skeletal fingers, there exists a legend. A tale whispered among the silent, spectral inhabitants of the fallen kingdom. They speak of "1031," a mysterious designation for a path, a trial, or perhaps a prophecy known only to a select few.

The journey begins in the dimly lit library of the Forgotten Crossroads, where ancient lore is etched into parchment-like pages that flutter with an otherworldly breeze. A lone figure, clad in a mantle of tattered, silver-trimmed elegance, stands before a shelf. The books here are not of knowledge but of memory, each one a vessel for the radiant echoes of Hallownest's past.

The figure, known only by their title, "The Keeper," reaches out and opens a book adorned with the number "1031." The pages, yellowed and crackling, reveal a map etched not with ink but with the very essence of Hallownest. A path unwinds, leading through the treacherous landscapes of the kingdom: through the labyrinthine streets of the City of Tears, across the perilous waters of the Forgotten Crossroads, and into the depths of the Hive.

As The Keeper traverses this mystical route, they are accompanied by the whispers of Hallownest's former glory. Ghostly knights, their armor shimmering with a light that is both beautiful and sorrowful, parade alongside. Their voices weave a melancholic melody, a lament for what has been lost and a plea for what might yet be saved.

The journey culminates at the threshold of a hidden garden, a place untouched by the decay that has claimed the rest of Hallownest. Within, a tree blooms with flowers that shine like stars in the night sky. This is the Radiant Bloom, a symbol of hope in a world that had thought itself devoid of it.

The Keeper, upon reaching the tree, discovers an inscription etched into the trunk: "For those who walk the path of 1031, there is but one truth - that in the depths of darkness, there lies a light that can guide us home." And with that, the whispers of the knights grow silent, their echoes fading into the ether, leaving The Keeper to ponder the mystery and the hope that "1031" embodies.

In the world of "Hollow Knight," where heroes rise and fall, and kingdoms hide in the shadows, "1031" becomes a beacon, a reminder that even in the darkest corners of Hallownest, there is beauty to be found and truths to be uncovered.

Start fresh or download a 1031-compatible 106% save file. |

The Ghost in the Kernel

Menderbug, a wiry programmer with goggles pushed to his forehead, stared at the terminal window on his vintage Mac OS X machine. The machine, a silver PowerMac G5, hummed like a drowsing Stalking Devout. On screen, the command line awaited.

For weeks, he had been trying to port a fan-made expansion for Hollow Knight—the fabled "1031" build, rumored to contain cut content: the Palace of the Broken Quill, the Weaver's Loom, a boss called the Sibilant King. The source code was a labyrinth of corrupted sprites and broken hitboxes.

But tonight, something was different.

He typed: ./hollowknight1031 --force-opengl --no-sandbox

The terminal didn't just execute. It screamed. A single line of error text, then nothing. The hard drive chattered like a crystal hunter’s mandibles. The screen flickered, and the dock vanished.

When the display returned, the desktop was gone. In its place: a dim, 2D cavern. Moss-creep adorned the Finder’s former location. The trash can had become a jagged pit.

Menderbug wasn’t at his desk anymore. He was in the system.

He looked down. His hands were white, porcelain shells. His body was a tiny, cloaked vessel. A nail—crafted from a bent SATA cable—hung at his side. In the corner of his vision, a tiny HUD displayed: Void given form: 9 masks | Geo: 0 | Save: Quit to Finder (Y/N)?

He pressed ‘N’. Curiosity was his shade.

The world was a corrupted Hollownest: folders became platforms, permissions formed gates that required "root keys," and every background process spawned a vengefly. He walked left, past a crashed iTunes visualizer (its shimmering colors now a toxic pool), and entered the Kernel Caverns.

There, hunched over a console, was a figure he recognized.

The Hollow Knight itself. But this version was translucent, flickering, and its armor was stitched with lines of code: kern_task: PID 1031 | memory leak | core dump imminent.

The Knight turned its masked face. A text bubble appeared: >_ The King's bind... is a kernel panic.

Menderbug realized what "1031" really was. Not a patch. An error. A memory address where a forgotten development build had crashed during the game's original Mac port, years ago. And its ghost—the Sibilant King—had been running as a background daemon ever since, consuming cycles, corrupting saves.

The boss battle was not of nail and spell, but of command and signal.

Menderbug raised his SATA-nail. The Hollow Knight (PID 1031) lunged. Each of its strikes triggered a segfault in the air. Menderbug parried, and in the parry’s spark, typed: sudo kill -9 1031

The Knight staggered. But it split into three processes—fork() errors—each crying in silent shell scripts.

He had to enter the Root Temple. The final chamber was a sparse directory: /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/Hollow Knight/1031/

A single file glowed: pale_king.core.

Menderbug sheathed his nail. He knew what to do. He knelt, placed his vessel’s hand on the file, and whispered the incantation every old Mac user knows:

chmod 000 pale_king.core

The Hollow Knight froze mid-swing. Its flickering stopped. The three forked processes merged back into one. And then, slowly, it bowed. Its mask cracked, and from the fissure spilled not infection—but a single, clean line of text:

Process 1031 terminated. Exit code: 0.

The caverns faded. The desktop reappeared. The trash can was just a trash can. And on Menderbug's terminal, a new line blinked:

[Game saved. Hallownest restored. Achievements unlocked: "Root Access," "The Unbound."]

He saved the log. Then he quit the terminal, ejected the G5’s hard drive, and placed it on a shelf next to a little ghost figurine.

From that day on, whenever Hallownest’s music glitched or a save file stuttered, Menderbug would tap the case and whisper: “No cost too great. No process left un-killed.”

1. Delete the Corrupted Preferences File (Most Common Fix)

The game stores a bad prefs file that triggers error 1031.

  1. Open Finder → Click GoGo to Folder (Shift+Cmd+G).
  2. Paste exactly:
    ~/Library/Preferences/
  3. Find and delete:
    unity.Team Cherry.Hollow Knight.plist
  4. Empty your Trash, then relaunch Hollow Knight.

The game will generate a fresh, working file on next launch.
