Hounds Of The Meteor -
Hounds of the Meteor
Hounds of the Meteor is a short dark-fantasy vignette blending cosmic horror, folklore, and a tense human drama. It centers on a remote mountain village that witnesses a falling meteor and soon finds itself stalked by spectral canines drawn to the celestial object. The story explores grief, superstition, and the dangerous allure of the unknown.
III. Survival Protocols
If you find yourself in Hound territory, you have already made a mistake. However, should you wish to live, follow these rules:
Rule #1: Mask Your Heat. Standard camouflage is useless. You need thermal damping. Submerge yourself in cold mud or wrap yourself in aluminized emergency blankets. If you are cold, you are invisible to their primary sense. Hounds of the Meteor
Rule #2: Do Not Use Projectiles. Guns are ineffective against their silicate hide. Ballistic impacts simply shatter the outer shell, releasing the radioactive plasma inside—which usually results in a fatal explosion for the shooter. Blunt force or high-voltage electricity can disrupt their internal core.
Rule #3: The "Meteor" Link. Hounds are psychically tethered to the meteor that brought them. If you can locate the Impact Crater and destroy the central spire or obelisk usually found there, the Hounds will enter a catatonic state. This is the only known way to stop a hunt permanently. Rule #4: High Ground. Hounds are heavy. Their density makes them poor climbers. Get high. Trees are insufficient (they will tear them down). Rocky pillars, ruined towers, or suspension bridges are your best bet.
IV. Theories of Origin
- The Terraforming Theory: Some scholars believe Hounds are biological terraforming drones sent by a dying civilization. They arrive, destroy the dominant life forms, and their radioactive decay alters the planet's atmosphere to make it habitable for their creators.
- The Galactic Immune System: A more metaphysical theory suggests planets are living organisms. When a meteor strikes (a wound), the Hounds are the "white blood cells" arriving to clean the wound by removing the infection (us).
- The Curse of the Hunter: Local legends claim the first Hound was a mortal hunter who made a pact with a falling star to never lose a prey. The star granted his wish, twisting him and his pack into monsters that must hunt forever, never resting, never eating, never stopping.
3. Plot Summary (Spoiler-Lite)
Setting: Alternate-history Meiji Restoration period (late 19th-century Japan). The crumbling Tokugawa shogunate is being overthrown by imperial forces, but shadow wars rage between assassins, secret societies, and foreign powers. The Terraforming Theory: Some scholars believe Hounds are
Protagonist: Ken Shirogane (a name evoking “sword” + “white metal”). A young, cynical swordsman who wields the “Meteor Blade” —a legendary, demon-cursed sword forged from a fallen star. The blade thirsts for blood and gradually corrupts its wielder.
Plot Engine: Ken is a rōnin (masterless samurai) who hunts down monstrous, supernatural outlaws called “Maggots” —humans mutated by exposure to residual “meteor energy” or dark arts. These creatures are not mere demons but tragic victims of the turbulent era. Ken is aided by a scrappy child sidekick, Mai, and a mysterious female doctor, Asuka, who seeks to cure the Maggots.
Major Arc: Ken discovers that the meteor that forged his sword also seeded multiple shards across Japan, creating other cursed blades and Maggots. He must collect or destroy them, all while resisting his own descent into becoming the very monster he hunts.
