I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! Season 14 Episode 1: Recapping the Launch

The fourteenth series of the British reality hit I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! officially premiered on November 16, 2014, on ITV. Returning to the familiar surroundings of the Australian jungle, the episode introduced ten new celebrities and a major twist that immediately divided the camp. The 2014 Cast Lineup

The initial batch of celebrities included a diverse mix of TV personalities, sporting legends, and musicians: Michael Buerk: Veteran newsreader and war journalist. Jimmy Bullard: Former Premier League footballer.

Craig Charles: Actor known for Coronation Street and Red Dwarf. Gemma Collins: Star of The Only Way Is Essex. Carl "Foggy" Fogarty: Superbike racing legend. Nadia Forde: Model and singer. Vicki Michelle: Actress known for 'Allo 'Allo!. Tinchy Stryder: Grime MC and rapper. Melanie Sykes: Television presenter and model. Kendra Wilkinson: Reality TV star and Playboy model. The "Celebrity Slammer" Twist

For the first time in the show's history, the public decided the fate of the contestants before they even set foot in the jungle. The viewers voted to divide the group into two teams, with one group sent directly to the "Celebrity Slammer"—a basic, jail-style camp with minimal comforts—while the others enjoyed a final night of luxury.

Those sent to the Slammer included Gemma Collins, Nadia Forde, Craig Charles, Vicki Michelle, and Carl Fogarty. Gemma Collins immediately became the center of attention after refusing to fly into the jungle by helicopter, opting for a private jeep followed by a "lonely trek" to find the jail. Highlights and Challenges

First Bushtucker Trial: Titled "Snakes in a Drain," the first challenge saw Carl "Foggy" Fogarty battling his way through a claustrophobic setup to secure meals for his campmates.

Skydiving Drama: Kendra Wilkinson, Tinchy Stryder, and Michael Buerk were tasked with a skydiving challenge to locate colored shapes for their fellow team members. Kendra, despite being a "wuss" by her own admission, successfully completed the jump though she was seen in tears.

Gemma's Breakdown: Within the first few hours, Gemma Collins suffered a breakdown over the lack of food and harsh conditions, signaling the start of her short and rocky tenure in the jungle.

The episode set a dramatic tone for the season, which eventually saw Carl Fogarty crowned the King of the Jungle on December 7, 2014.

I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! (British TV series) series 14

The fourteenth series of the hit UK reality show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! kicked off on November 16, 2014, on ITV. This premiere episode, titled "Snakes in a Drain," introduced a fresh batch of ten celebrities who traded their lives of luxury for the harsh realities of the Australian outback. The Premiere Twist: Divided Camps

In a significant shift for the series, the premiere introduced a "public-driven" twist. Before the celebrities even arrived, viewers voted to split the group into two teams: one heading to the relatively "luxurious" Croc Creek and the other to the dreaded Celebrity Slammer, a jungle prison with minimal rations. The initial lineup of contestants included: Michael Buerk (Veteran newsreader) Jimmy Bullard (Former Premier League footballer) Craig Charles (Red Dwarf and Coronation Street actor) Gemma Collins (TOWIE star) Carl "Foggy" Fogarty (Superbike champion) Nadia Forde (Model and singer) Vicki Michelle ('Allo 'Allo! actress) Tinchy Stryder (Rapper) Melanie Sykes (TV presenter) Kendra Wilkinson (Reality star and Playboy model) The First Bushtucker Trial: "Snakes in a Drain"

The series lived up to its reputation for terror immediately. Carl "Foggy" Fogarty was selected to perform the season's very first Bushtucker Trial. He was lowered into a dark drain and forced to navigate through 40 pythons to retrieve stars. Foggy proved his mettle early on, successfully collecting all 6 out of 6 stars, securing a meal of wallaby shank for his campmates. Early Drama and Iconic Moments

The episode also set the stage for one of the most memorable short-lived stints in the show's history: Gemma Collins. From her legendary shower scene to her immediate struggle with the jungle's conditions, Gemma's distress was apparent from the start. This episode laid the groundwork for her eventual withdrawal on Day 3. Setting the Scene for Season 14

Hosts Ant and Dec returned with their trademark wit, overseeing the arrival of the campmates via helicopter and boat. While Foggy eventually went on to be crowned the King of the Jungle on December 7, 2014, this first episode was defined by the celebrities' initial shock at the Celebrity Slammer and the grueling reality of life without basic comforts.

3 Helpful Takeaways from Episode 1

If you’re planning a watch party or just want to sound like a superfan, here’s what you need to know:

  1. The Early Favorite is Obvious: Watch the person who comforts the screamer during the trial. That quiet, patient one? They’re getting the "King/Queen of the Jungle" edit.
  2. Don’t Trust the Edit: The "villain" of Episode 1 (usually the one who refuses to do a trial or complains about the food) is often the most normal person who just had a bad day. Give them an episode or two.
  3. Stock Your Own Snacks: Watching people eat kangaroo anus on a diet of rice and beans is sadistic fun, but you’ll want your own popcorn and a bucket (just in case you get sympathy queasy).

Revisiting the Jungle Premiere: A Deep Dive into I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! Season 14 Episode 1

When the iconic ITV series I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! returns each November, fans know they are in for a cocktail of creepy crawlies, culinary catastrophes, and combustible campmate conflicts. However, Season 14 Episode 1—which aired on November 16, 2014—wasn't just another premiere. It was a masterclass in tension, tears, and the sheer terror of the Australian bush.

For viewers searching for the exact moment a group of celebrities traded their luxuries for leeches, this episode remains a high-water mark for the franchise. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the episode that launched one of the most memorable series in the show’s history.

The First Bush Tucker Trial: "Gutsy Graveyard"

No review of I'm a Celebrity... Season 14 Episode 1 would be complete without discussing the first eating trial. Viewers voted for Jake Quickenden and Tinchy Stryder to face the "Gutsy Graveyard."

They were buried up to their necks in mud and had to eat a "platter" that included:

Tinchy Stryder vomited after the shrimp paste but kept going, earning respect from the audience. Jake Quickenden, desperate to prove his masculinity, swallowed the testicle whole. The trial ended with both men covered in offal, setting the bar incredibly high for the rest of the series.

Final Verdict: A 9/10 Jungle Premiere

Moments of genuine danger, psychological breakdowns, and a cast that felt like a powder keg—Season 14 Episode 1 delivered everything a fan could want. It asked the question the title promises: How far will you push a celebrity before they break? And in Gemma Collins’ case, the answer was "about 30 feet off the ground."

Whether you are a long-time fan rewatching for the drama or a new viewer curious about the hype, this episode remains essential viewing. It captures the raw, unfiltered chaos that makes I’m a Celebrity the king of the reality jungle.

The Electric Cast of Season 14

Before a single trial began, the magic of Episode 1 rested on the casting. Season 14 boasted a diverse lineup of British personality archetypes. The episode introduced:

Right from the opening credits of Season 14 Episode 1, it was clear that friction was inevitable—specifically between the high-maintenance energy of Gemma Collins and the survivalist instincts of the rest.

The Group Split: Snake Rock vs. Camp Savvy

For the first time in the show’s history, Episode 1 introduced a physical camp divide. By completing the Skyfall, four celebrities won the right to live in the luxurious "Celebrity Hotel" (dubbed "Snake Rock") for two nights.

The junkyard was a hellscape of old tires, rusty barrels, and no food. The immediate inequality sparked the first campfire arguments of the season just 45 minutes in. Gemma’s visible jealousy as she watched Snake Rock eat kangaroo pizza while she scavenged for cockroaches was peak reality television.

The First Trial: Baptism by Bugs

No first episode is complete without a dreaded "Eating Challenge" or a "Tunnel of Terror." In Episode 1, the chosen two (voted by the public before they even unpacked their hammocks) faced a stomach-churning Bushtucker Trial.

What went down:

Result: 4 out of 6 stars for camp. Not a great start, but enough rice and beans to keep everyone from mutinying on night one.
