ସତୀଙ୍କ ଦେହତ୍ୟାଗ ପରେ ମହାଦେବ ଗଭୀର ସମାଧିରେ ଲୀନ ରହିଲେ । ସେହି ସମୟରେ ତାରକାସୁର ନାମକ ଜଣେ ଅସୁର ବ୍ରହ୍ମାଙ୍କଠାରୁ ବର ପାଇ ସ୍ୱର୍ଗଲୋକରେ ଆତଙ୍କ ଖେଳାଇଲା । ତାରକାସୁରର ମୃତ୍ୟୁ କେବଳ ଶିବଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ର ଦ୍ୱାରା ହିଁ ସମ୍ଭବ ଥିଲା ।
ଏଣେ ମାତା ସତୀ, ହିମାଳୟଙ୍କ କନ୍ୟା 'ପାର୍ବତୀ' ଭାବେ ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ ଗ୍ରହଣ କଲେ । ପିଲାଦିନରୁ ପାର୍ବତୀ ଶିବଙ୍କ ଭକ୍ତ ଥିଲେ ଏବଂ ତାଙ୍କୁ ହିଁ ପତି ରୂପେ ପାଇବାକୁ ଚାହୁଁଥିଲେ । ଶିବଙ୍କ ଧ୍ୟାନ ଭଙ୍ଗ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଦେବତାମାନେ କାମଦେବଙ୍କୁ ପଠାଇଲେ, କିନ୍ତୁ ଶିବ କ୍ରୋଧିତ ହୋଇ କାମଦେବଙ୍କୁ ଭସ୍ମ କରିଦେଲେ ।
ପାର୍ବତୀ ବୁଝିପାରିଲେ ଯେ କେବଳ ସୌନ୍ଦର୍ଯ୍ୟରେ ଶିବଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରସନ୍ନ କରିବା ଅସମ୍ଭବ । ତେଣୁ ସେ କଠୋର ତପସ୍ୟା ଆରମ୍ଭ କଲେ । ବର୍ଷ ବର୍ଷ ଧରି ସେ ଅନ୍ନ-ଜଳ ତ୍ୟାଗ କରି ଶିବଙ୍କ ନାମ ଜପ କଲେ । ଶେଷରେ ଶିବ ଜଣେ ବ୍ରାହ୍ମଣ ବେଶରେ ଆସି ପାର୍ବତୀଙ୍କ ପରୀକ୍ଷା ନେଲେ ଏବଂ ନିଜର ନିନ୍ଦା କଲେ । କିନ୍ତୁ ପାର୍ବତୀଙ୍କ ଅଟଳ ଶ୍ରଦ୍ଧା ଦେଖି ସେ ପ୍ରସନ୍ନ ହେଲେ ଓ ନିଜର ପ୍ରକୃତ ରୂପ ପ୍ରକଟ କଲେ ।
