⚠️ Important Disclaimer
There is no official Shovel Knight mobile version by Yacht Club Games. This guide covers the community-maintained Android port based on the PC version’s source code (available via GitHub). You will need to own the game legally (Steam, GOG, or Switch/PC copy) to extract assets.
Controller Support: The Platinum Experience
If you own a Razer Kishi, Backbone One, Xbox Wireless Controller, or PlayStation DualSense, congratulations. Shovel Knight Android transforms into the definitive version of the game.
The port features native, lag-free controller mapping. When you connect a Bluetooth gamepad, the touch icons vanish, and the game instantly recognizes button layouts. There is no "manual mapping" needed. Rumble (haptic feedback) is supported on controllers that allow it, though Android’s Bluetooth stack sometimes reduces intensity. ⚠️ Important Disclaimer There is no official Shovel
Playing with a controller on an OLED phone (like a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or a Pixel 8 Pro) using a clip or telescopic controller is arguably better than playing on a Switch Lite. The resolution is higher, the framerate is rock solid, and load times are significantly faster.
Supported controllers tested working:
- Xbox Series X/S (Bluetooth)
- PS5 DualSense
- PS4 DualShock 4
- 8BitDo Pro 2
- Gamesir X2 Pro
- Touchscreen overlay disabled when detected.
The Downside: The DRM & The Dig
No blog post is honest without a caveat.
- Internet Check: Like many premium mobile ports, this game requires an internet connection to verify the license at launch. If you plan to play this on a plane or subway, tether or authenticate before you leave the house.
- Shovel Knight Dig vs. Treasure Trove: Don't get confused. Shovel Knight Dig is a separate, excellent roguelite developed by Nitrome. This port is the original linear action-platformer. Buy both if you have the cash; they offer very different experiences.
Content Breakdown: What Campaigns Are Included?
One of Yacht Club’s greatest triumphs was the Treasure Trove model. Buying the game once gets you four full campaigns, each with a completely different playstyle.
On Android, you get everything:
- Shovel of Hope: The original story. Use your shovel to dig, attack, and bounce. Rescue Shield Knight, defeat the Order of No Quarter.
- Plague of Shadows: Play as the alchemist Plague Knight. You can’t shovel bounce. Instead, you mix bomb components for arc-based explosive jumps and attacks. This is the hardest campaign on touch.
- Specter of Torment: Play as Reize’s mentor. Scythe-sliding and rail-grinding mechanics. Many consider this the best-written campaign.
- King of Cards: A prequel about King Knight. Features a card-based mini-game (Joustus) and a shoulder-bash mechanic.
- Shovel Knight Showdown: A 4-player platform fighter. On Android, this supports up to 4 Bluetooth controllers simultaneously (though you’ll need a big tablet to see what’s happening).
Touch Controls
- Left side: D-pad (4 directions)
- Right side: Jump, Attack, Relic, Pause
- Double-tap relics to switch
- Pro tip: Enable “Large buttons” in settings if you have big fingers.
