Silent Hunter 3 All Submarines ~repack~ May 2026
In Silent Hunter 3 , you command various German U-boats, each designed for specific roles, from coastal defense to long-range Atlantic raids. As the war progresses, you can use Renown earned from successful patrols to upgrade to more advanced models. Playable U-Boat Classes
The game features four primary U-boat types, most of which have multiple sub-variants:
Type II (Coastal Boats): Known as "canoes," these are small, maneuverable, and primarily used for training or coastal operations.
Type IIA: Your starting boat if beginning in 1939. It has very limited range and carries only 5 torpedoes.
Type IID: An improved version with extra "saddle tanks" for better range, allowing operations around the British Isles.
Type VII (The Workhorse): The most iconic and versatile U-boat of the war, balancing speed, maneuverability, and firepower. silent hunter 3 all submarines
Type VIIB: Faster and more powerful than the Type II, featuring an internal aft torpedo tube that allows for submerged reloading.
Type VIIC: The definitive Atlantic hunter. It is highly upgradeable and serves as the backbone of the U-boat fleet throughout the mid-war years.
Type VIIC/41: An up-armored variant designed to withstand deeper diving depths.
Type IX (Ocean-Going Raiders): Large, heavy boats designed for long-range patrols, such as those to the American coast or the South Atlantic.
Type IXB: Features a much larger torpedo capacity (22 torpedoes) compared to the Type VII. In Silent Hunter 3 , you command various
Type IXC: Offers even greater range and improved anti-aircraft suites.
Type IXC/40 & Type IXD2: Specialized variants for extreme-range missions.
Type XXI (Electroboat): A revolutionary late-war design optimized for staying submerged almost indefinitely.
Features: It is significantly faster underwater than on the surface, features a hydraulic torpedo loader for rapid fire, and is the most advanced boat available in the game. 2. The Long-Range Strikers: Large U-boats (Type IX)
If the Type VII is a knife fighter, the Type IX is a long-range sniper. These boats are larger, slower to dive, and harder to turn, but they possess massive fuel reserves and heavy armament. They are designed for distant waters.
Practical Advice: Which U-boat to Choose?
- Start of career (1939-40): Type VIIB. Balanced, survivable, and teaches core tactics.
- For long-distance challenges: Type IX (especially IXD2 in 1943) – patrol off New York or Freetown.
- For shallow water / early war: Type II is fun for a change, but fragile.
- For late war (1944+): Type XXI – learn modern submarine tactics (silent running, deep evasion).
- Modded games (GWX): Try Type XXIII for a stealthy “one-shot” coastal raider.
Tactical Role & Strategy
The Type IX exists for distant waters. You can patrol off Nova Scotia, the Caribbean, or even West Africa. In SH3’s campaign, transferring to a IX from a VII feels like switching from a pickup truck to a freight hauler.
Pros:
- Massive torpedo reserves (sink an entire convoy alone)
- Oberkommando der Marine (OKM) will give you remote zones
- Cabin space for high morale (historically, Type IXs had better food storage)
Cons:
- Dive time is a death sentence in 1943+
- Larger silhouette (detected further away)
- Slower to reverse or turn (poor crash dive)
Best Career Path:
- Do not take a Type IX into the Bay of Biscay in 1943 (Leigh Light aircraft will kill you)
- Best used between 1940-1942
- Operate at night, surfaced, to use your speed advantage
Historical Notable Mission: Type IX boats made the "Monsun Gruppe" patrols to Penang, Malaysia (not in vanilla SH3 but in mods).
