Bug Fixes & Performance on the Nintendo Switch

The "Sonic Origins update 110" was arguably more important for the Switch than other consoles because the Switch version had distinct porting issues.

Handheld Mode (720p / 60fps)

  • Before 1.1.0: Frequent frame dips in Sonic 3 & Knuckles during the Sandopolis Zone ghost section. Screen tilt (gyro) was useless.
  • After 1.1.0: Locked 60fps. SEGA finally optimized the Retro Engine for the Switch's Tegra X1 chip. The game no longer throttles during lightning effects in Sonic 2’s Wing Fortress Zone.

Pros (Post-110 Update)

  • The game finally feels as responsive as the Sonic Mania engine.
  • DLC now feels like an expansion, not a scam.
  • Switch OLED blacks look incredible during the new DLC animated borders.

Known Remaining Issues (As of 1.1.0):

  • Loading Times: The Switch eShop version still takes 4-5 seconds to load a Game Gear game, compared to 1 second on PS5.
  • Leaderboards: The "Mission Mode" leaderboards for the Switch are still heavily bot-infested, as this patch did not address online security.

The Core Fixes (Base Game)

  • Input Lag Reduction: The most immediate change. Pre-patch, the Switch version suffered from 6-8 frames of input lag. Update 1.1.0 cut this down to roughly 3-4 frames, bringing it in line with the Sonic Advance series.
  • Audio Overhaul: The infamous “crackling” audio in Sonic CD’s US soundtrack was eliminated. The 32-bit sound emulation was refined.
  • Life Icon Counter: A bizarre bug where lives displayed as "X 0" even when you had 99 lives was fixed.

However, the real headline was how this patch affected the DLC (Digital Luxury Content) and the Switch’s unique hardware features.
