Long ago, in the Satya Yuga (the Age of Truth), there lived a great sage named Yagyavalkya.
Sage Yagyavalkya was a scholar of immense knowledge, but he was tormented by a severe physical ailment. He had lost his eyesight. In the Vedic tradition, the Sun (Surya) is considered the deity of the eyes (Chakshu). It is said, "Chakshu Suryo Ajayata" (The Sun became the eyes of the cosmic being).
