The Paradox of Immortal Five Blooms: A Narratological Analysis of Cyclical Progression in Cultivation RPGs
Author:
J. X. Ling
Institute of Digital Narratives, East Asian Game Studies Lab
Abstract:
This paper examines the structural and thematic significance of the "Five Blooms" cycle in the cultivation role-playing game Tale of Immortal (鬼谷八荒), specifically focusing on the modified distribution TENOKE. The "Five Blooms" represent quintessential stages of spiritual awakening (Qi Condensation, Foundation Establishment, Golden Core, Nascent Soul, Ascension). We argue that the TENOKE variant inadvertently reveals latent mechanics of temporal repetition versus immortal progression. Through comparative analysis of save-state trajectories and narrative bifurcations, we propose that the "immortal" condition is not linear achievement but a dialectical suspension between bloom and decay.

1. Introduction
In Tale of Immortal, players pursue transcendence through martial arts, alchemy, and destiny manipulation. The "Five Blooms" (五开) is a community-derived term for five critical bottleneck breakthroughs. The TENOKE release—a cracked version removing DRM—has enabled unprecedented save-state manipulation, allowing scholars to dissect failure states often hidden in commercial builds.
2. The Fivefold Structure
Each Bloom corresponds to:
- Mortal Bloom – Initial essence gathering.
- Earth Bloom – Territorial sect conflicts.
- Human Bloom – Karmic relationship webs.
- Heaven Bloom – Tribulation lightning.
- Dao Bloom – Fusion with natural law.
In the TENOKE version, players can loop between Blooms 3 and 4 indefinitely, creating a "pseudo-immortality" that the official patch prevents.
3. TENOKE as Analytical Tool
Removing always-online checks allows repeated failure without permanent death. We identify a glitch—"Five Blooms Stutter"—where saving during Bloom 4’s tribulation resets the sequence but retains cultivation points. This accidental feature produces narrative paradoxes: a character who has died five times yet remembers each death.
4. Conclusion
The TENOKE mod transforms Tale of Immortal from a progress-driven RPG into a existential simulator. The "Immortal Five Blooms" is not a goal but a trap: perfect repetition without closure. Future work should explore whether cracked clients preserve unintended philosophical depth.

Installation & Performance: The TENOKE Advantage
One major bugbear of the official Steam version of Tale of Immortal is the online authentication snap-stutter. Every time you open the inventory or a sect menu, the official version pings a server in China, causing a 0.5-second lag.
The Tale of Immortal Five Blooms-TENOKE release strips out this phone-home code. Result:
- 80% faster menu navigation.
- Zero save file corruption (a known issue in the official cloud-save version).
- Offline play on any PC (Steam Deck works perfectly with the TENOKE crack via Proton GE).
3. Combat and Skills
Combat is automated turn-based. You do not control the characters during the fight; you only set the loadout beforehand.
- Martial Arts (Skills): You learn these from Sects or random drops.
- Right Click (Sword/Qupu): Your main damage source.
- Left Click (Sword/Qupu): Usually a mobility move or a buff.

Tale of Immortal: Five Blooms is a content expansion for the popular Chinese cultivation RPG, 鬼谷八荒 Tale of Immortal. This review focuses on the DLC's content and its reception since its late 2024 release.
The "Five Blooms" DLC introduces five unique female cultivators—Ao Yao, Tianxiang, Shuang Ling, Lan You, and Yin'er—each with independent storylines and secrets to uncover as you traverse the world of Ba Huang. These characters are designed to assist the player during their early progression, providing manuals and other perks that ease the grind of the early game.
Art Style & Character Depth: The character portraits and unique backstories are widely praised, maintaining the base game's "lush" watercolor aesthetic.
Narrative Value: For players who enjoy the "solo cultivator" experience or xianxia web novels, the DLC offers romantic and sometimes tragic stories that enrich the world's narrative.
Price Point: At roughly $5, many players find the content a worthwhile investment to support the developers.
Interaction Limits: A major point of criticism is the lack of meaningful interaction after completing a character's specific questline. Players often feel these characters become "hollow" NPCs once their story ends.
Translation & Technical Issues: While English translations have improved, some players still encounter untranslated text or bugs in specific quest events.
Gameplay Integration: Some long-time players feel the new content doesn't always mesh well with the core sandbox mechanics, occasionally feeling like a separate, high-frequency distraction rather than a natural part of the world. Final Verdict
If you are already a fan of Tale of Immortal and want more personalized stories or early-game boosts, Five Blooms is a solid purchase. However, if you're looking for deep, long-term companions with complex AI interactions beyond their questlines, you may find the experience somewhat lacking.

What is Five Blooms?
Unlike simple cosmetic packs or minor updates, Five Blooms acts as an interlude expansion. It drops players into a new crisis within the Mount Barbarian region. The natural balance of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) has become corrupted. Spiritual flowers that once bloomed to signify elemental harmony now wilt, giving rise to monstrous flora and unstable Qi vortices.
The expansion introduces:
- A New Questline: Roughly 4-6 hours of main story content, focusing on an ancient herbologist’s legacy.
- Five New Fate destinies: These permanent character traits alter how you interact with elemental skills and weather effects on the world map.
- Elemental Bloom Mutations: Bosses and elite enemies now possess “Bloom” variants, changing their attack patterns based on a cycling elemental weakness.
Worldbuilding
- Setting: a ring of wind-cut isles, granite cliffs, sun-drenched coves, salt-tangled forests, and shallow lagoons where the five blooms appear cyclically. Weather and sea-gesture metaphors run through the culture’s language.
- The Blooms: each bloom embodies a distinct aspect of “immortality”:
- Litha — stasis of the body (suspends aging)
- Sern — preservation of skill and muscle (endless mastery)
- Myr — memory’s archive (perfect recall, at a price)
- Kame — social immortality (enduring reputation, mythic standing)
- Oren — soul persistence (reincarnation-like continuity) Each flower’s nectar, pollen, or root is used differently—embedded in amulets, ingested as tinctures, woven into funerary cloth.
- Culture: rites govern bloom cultivation; an order of ritualists—named the Keepers—rotate stewardship. Festival cycles punctuate life: Binding Week (planting), Midwatch (nurture), and the Longwake (renewal or sacrifice).
- Ecology & Cost: blooms alter local ecology—suppressing certain predators or reshaping tides—so immortality is entangled with environmental feedback loops. The community’s prosperity depends on careful, secret trade-offs.
Narrative Structure & Pacing
- Structure: three-act arc with interleaved past-tense fragments. Act I establishes the ritual world, introduces stakes and the five protagonists. Act II deepens conflicts—secrets surface, alliances fracture, and rituals falter. Act III culminates in a choice: preserve the old order by reinforcing the bloom-cycle or break it, accepting mortal fragility to restore ecological and social wholeness.
- Point of View: rotating limited third-person perspectives aligned with the five protagonists, each chapter voice reflecting their bloom’s thematic focus. Occasional epistolary inserts (ritual logs, songs, ledger entries) supply cultural texture and unreliable history.
- Tone and pacing: elegiac, observant, occasionally sharp; slower passages dwell on ritual detail and environment, punctuated by compact, tense sequences—storm, confrontation, ritual failure.
Characters
- The Ailing Ritualist (Edda): Keeper nearing the end of an extended life granted by Litha. She wrestles with the bodily stasis that preserved her but left her emotionally hollow. Her arc: acceptance and deliberate unbinding.
- The Outsider Scholar (Marek): A mainland chronicler attracted by Myr’s promise of perfect memory. He arrives idealistic but learns that recorded truth can bury living voices. His arc: from archival zeal to empathetic witness.
- The Grieving Youth (Suri): Recently bereaved, drawn to Kame to immortalize a lost parent. Suri begins with reverence for tradition and ends by choosing a different mode of remembrance.
- The Keeper of Secrets (Nael): An enforcer within the Keepers who knows the ecological debts exacted by bloom use. Nael’s moral compromises are central; he must choose between preserving order and revealing the toll.
- The Rebel (Isha): A fisher and organizer who resents the concentration of bloom access among elders. She catalyzes social rupture and forces transparent reckoning.
Gameplay Integration
One of Tale of Immortal’s strengths has always been how its DLCs integrate without resetting progress. Five Blooms is no exception. The new content becomes available once you reach the Foundation Establishment realm. A new NPC, the “Wilted Sage,” appears in the starting town, offering a strange, petal-covered talisman.
From there, players must traverse a new procedurally generated sub-realm: the Garden of Cycles. Unlike the main game’s sprawling continents, this is a focused, labyrinthine dungeon where each floor is themed around a specific element. To proceed, you must solve environmental puzzles — like redirecting Qi streams or planting spirit seeds in correct elemental altars.
The combat shines here. The “Bloom” enemy variants force players to switch manual strategies. A Wood-Bloom Yeti, for example, regenerates health rapidly unless you hit it with a Metal-aspected ability during its pollen attack. It’s a refreshing change of pace from the base game’s “bigger numbers win” meta.
Review: Tale of Immortal: Five Blooms (TENOKE) – Cultivation Meets Chaos
Rating: 8/10
If you’ve been sleeping on the Chinese indie scene, Tale of Immortal (鬼谷八荒) has been a quiet powerhouse for years. Five Blooms isn't a sequel, but the latest major content drop/standalone expansion in the TENOKE release package, and it throws you headfirst into a sandbox world of Daoist cultivation, rogue-lite dungeons, and dramatic, hand-painted storytelling.
The Good: More Than Just Grinding
First, the art style remains stunning. The ink-wash (Shuimohua) aesthetic makes every lightning bolt and spirit beast feel like a classical scroll come to life. Five Blooms adds new narrative branches that finally make your "righteous" vs. "demonic" path choices feel weighty.
Gameplay loop: You hunt spirit beasts, absorb essences, break through bottlenecks, and try not to die of old age before you ascend. It’s grindy, but addictive. The new "Bloom" mechanics add temporary seasonal buffs that force you to plan your resource gathering better than before. The combat is still top-down bullet-hell chaos—dodging spirit attacks while spamming sword flight arts never gets old.
The TENOKE Specifics
Let’s address the elephant in the room. This is the TENOKE release, meaning it bypasses the always-online launcher. For a single-player game, this is a blessing. Load times feel snappier, and you don't get booted to desktop because the "Cloud sync" hiccupped. However, the installation via TENOKE is a bit clunky; you need to manually apply the crack and block the .exe in your firewall to avoid it trying to phone home.
The Bad: Wall of Text & Repetition
New players, beware. The translation from Mandarin is functional but often wooden. There are dozens of NPCs with randomly generated "Personalities" (Lustful, Cautious, Goofy) that lead to hilariously broken interactions—like a saint asking you for a one-night stand after you save their village. It’s funny the first time, immersion-breaking the 20th.
Also, the mid-game grind is real. Five Blooms adds flowers to collect, but you’ll still be doing the same three dungeon types for 20 hours. If you hate RNG stats on loot, this will drive you mad.
Verdict
Buy it if: You love Cultivation Simulator, Hades, or watching numbers go up while you become an immortal god. The TENOKE version is the definitive way to play on PC due to the removal of intrusive DRM.
Skip if: You need a guided story or hate reading walls of text between fights.
Final Score: 8/10 – A beautiful, grindy, chaotic sandbox that respects your time slightly more than the original, now with fewer login barriers.
