Unlocking the Secrets: A Look at Tomb of Destiny – Chapters 1 & 2 (v04) by Ultrababes

If you’ve been following the indie comic scene—or specifically the work of the elusive creator Ultrababes—you know that Tomb of Destiny is a title that demands patience and sharp eyes. After a quiet period, the latest update (v04) for Chapters 1 and 2 has dropped, and it’s time to dig into the sarcophagus.

Here’s what you need to know about this newest revision.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next After V04?

With Chapters 1 and 2 now updated to V04, Ultrababes has announced a brief hiatus before beginning Chapter 3 (working title: "The Bone Compass" ). According to a recent progress note:

"V04 took longer than expected because I had to reconcile some lore inconsistencies between Ch1 and Ch2. Chapter 3 will be built from the ground up with V04’s rendering pipeline."

Additionally, Ultrababes hinted at a "Collected V04 Print Edition" for later this year, featuring both chapters, concept art, and a foreword by a guest indie cartoonist.

First Impressions of the Update

Reading Chapters 1 & 2 back-to-back in v04 feels like watching a director’s cut. The pacing is noticeably tighter. The mystery of the “Destiny Tablets” is introduced earlier (page 4 of Ch. 1 instead of page 9), which hooks you immediately.

That said, the lettering in two panels of Chapter 2 remains cramped—a minor gripe for an otherwise polished self-published work.

Worldbuilding and lore

Ultrababes uses hints and fragments — inscriptions, motifs, half-remembered rites — to sketch a wider world without heavy-handed exposition. This implies several smart choices:

  • Keep larger lore fragmented across artifacts and murals rather than a single info-dump.
  • Use sensory clues and the protagonist’s emotional reactions to reveal cultural contours.
  • Avoid generic fantasy names and instead favor evocative, image-driven descriptors that tether worldbuilding to the tomb’s aesthetics.
