Quick guide — Visual FoxPro 7.0 (free download, updated)
Note: Visual FoxPro 7.0 is a discontinued Microsoft product (released 2001). Official downloads from Microsoft are no longer provided; using archived installers or unofficial sources can carry legal and security risks. Below is a concise, practical guide covering what VFP 7.0 is, safe alternatives, how to obtain a copy (archival), and how to run it on modern systems.
Part 3: How to Obtain and Install Visual FoxPro 7.0 (Updated for Windows 10/11)
The term "updated" in the keyword suggests users want a version that works on modern operating systems. Let's break that down.
The Status of Visual FoxPro 7.0
First, it is important to clarify the legal and support status. Visual FoxPro 7.0 was released in 2001 as part of the transition towards the .NET era. It was eventually superseded by VFP 8.0 and finally VFP 9.0 (the last version). visual foxpro 70 free download updated
Microsoft ended mainstream support for Visual FoxPro 7.0 many years ago. This means:
- There are no official updates or security patches being released.
- It is not available on the Microsoft Store or modern Microsoft subscription services.
- Running it on modern Windows (10/11) may require compatibility tweaks.
Downloading Visual FoxPro 7.0 (Updated/SP1)
Because Microsoft no longer distributes VFP 7.0 officially, it has fallen into the category of Abandonware. While downloading it is technically a legal gray area depending on your jurisdiction, it is generally the only way for developers to access the tool for maintaining old codebases. Quick guide — Visual FoxPro 7
Where to find it:
- Internet Archive: The most reliable source for preserving software history. You can often find disc images (ISO files) of the Visual Studio .NET 2002 discs (which included VFP 7) or the standalone VFP 7.0 SP1 discs.
- Search Term Tip: "Visual FoxPro 7.0 SP1 ISO" or "Visual FoxPro 7.0 Service Pack 1".
- Veteran Developer Forums: Communities like (the now archived) FoxPro forums or specific subreddits dedicated to xBase languages often have sticky threads with links to archived installers to help keep the community alive.
Note: Always scan any downloaded files from third-party sites with an antivirus scanner before mounting or installing. There are no official updates or security patches
2. Open Source Alternatives to Open DBF Files
- LibreOffice Base – Opens and edits DBF tables natively.
- DBF Viewer Plus – Free tool to view/index/export DBF files.
- Harbour Project – An open-source Clipper/FoxPro compiler that can run many VFP PRG scripts.
Legal Status
- Microsoft Visual FoxPro 7.0 was never freeware. It required a paid license (typically $99–$549 depending on version).
- No free legal download exists from Microsoft. The official MSDN/VLS downloads are gone.
- Abandonware is a gray area. While some archives host VFP for educational purposes, distributing proprietary Microsoft software without permission is technically copyright infringement.

History of Visual FoxPro
Visual FoxPro (VFP) evolved from FoxPro, which was originally developed by Fox Software. The first version of FoxPro was released in 1988. Microsoft acquired Fox Software in 1992, and the product was subsequently renamed Visual FoxPro. Over the years, several versions were released, with Visual FoxPro 7.0 being one of the most popular and widely used versions.
Considerations Before Downloading
- Legal Considerations: While Microsoft has ended its official support for Visual FoxPro, ensure you have the right to use the software. Some sources might provide legitimate downloads; however, copyright laws still apply.
- Security Risks: Old software may not receive security updates, making it vulnerable to known exploits.
- Compatibility Issues: VFP 7.0 was designed for older Windows versions and may not run smoothly on modern operating systems.

Hi, do you start each colour above the previous start point or do you move the start positions on each colour change
Hi Vanessa, I do move my start point for each colour by a couple a stitches each time.
Why do you do this? I’m making the basket now. Love it. But I didn’t see this commet until now.
Lynn, I start at a different position to spread out the starting point which can leave a visible line if each row is started at the same point. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done this though.
Makes sense. I will post a picture in revelry. I love the standing sc and the invisible join. I can use these in any pattern, right? The colors in this basket are helping me through a Michigan winter. Enjoy your Aussie summer☺
