Important upfront note: Microsoft officially canceled Windows 10X in May 2021. It was never released to the public. Any “ISO” or “build” online is either:
A leaked internal development build (Windows 10X was never finished).
A fake or repackaged standard Windows 10/11 ISO.
A “patched” version modified by third parties to run on unsupported hardware.
Legality: Microsoft has not released abandonware declarations for 10X. While Archive.org operates in a legal gray area for preservation, you are using a development build that violates the Windows 10X EULA. Do not use this for production.
Security: Because the timebomb is removed and the drivers are injected via unsupported methods, Windows Update is broken. You will be running an OS with kernel-level exploits from 2020. Do not log into your real Microsoft account or enter credit card info.
Stability Expectation: Expect a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) every 90 minutes.
The Hyper-V Method (Best Success Rate):
Enable Hyper-V: Go to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off > Check Hyper-V.
Create the VM:
Open Hyper-V Manager.
Select New > Virtual Machine.
Generation: Generation 2 is preferred (UEFI based).
Memory: Allocate at least 4096 MB (4GB) Startup Memory.
Networking: Create an "External Switch" so the VM can access the internet (Windows 10X networking can be buggy with default internal switches).
Hard Disk: Select "Use an existing virtual hard disk" and point it to the .vhdx file you acquired from Archive.org.
Visit archive.org and search for “Windows 10X Build 20279.1002 ISO” or “Windows 10X Patched.”
Look for a package that includes the patch.cmd or a pre-patched .VHDX file. The most user-friendly upload is by user “Enderman” (or similar community preservers).
Download both the raw VHDX and the separate patching tool (often hosted on GitHub, but linked from the Archive page).
Run the patcher as Administrator on a Windows 10/11 machine (it modifies the VHDX).
Create a VM (at least 4GB RAM, 2 CPU cores) and attach the patched VHDX as a hard drive.
Boot, and enjoy a glimpse of the Windows that might have been.
Potential issues:
No updates – Microsoft never released public updates.
Driver problems – Many patched versions struggle with Wi-Fi, graphics, or audio.
Missing features – Win32 apps may not run correctly.
Security – Unknown modifications could contain malware. Always scan and run in an isolated VM.
Stability – Crashes, boot loops, or inability to shut down are common.
